What to See

Pyramid of the Sun — Pirámide del Sol

The third-largest pyramid in the world at 65 meters high. Climbing to the top takes about 20 minutes on steep steps — but the panoramic views over the entire ancient city are extraordinary. This is the main event. Go early when it's cooler.

Pyramid of the Moon — Pirámide de la Luna

Slightly smaller but positioned at the northern end of the Avenue of the Dead with the Pyramid of the Sun perfectly framed behind you. The view from the top is the best photograph you'll take in Mexico.

Avenue of the Dead — Calzada de los Muertos

The 4-kilometer ceremonial avenue that runs through the heart of the ancient city. Walk its full length to understand the scale of what was once one of the most populous cities in the ancient world — home to over 125,000 people at its peak.

Palace of Quetzalpapalotl

A beautifully preserved palace complex with original murals and stone carvings near the Pyramid of the Moon. Often overlooked by visitors rushing between the big pyramids — worth 30 minutes of your time.

What to Bring

Where to Eat

Several restaurants line the archaeological zone. La Gruta — built inside an actual cave — is the most atmospheric option for lunch. Order the mole negro and handmade tortillas. Budget $10–15 USD per person. There are also food vendors at the site entrance with cheaper options.

Tour Options

Guided day trips from Mexico City run $25–50 USD including transport, guide, and sometimes lunch. Book through Viator or GetYourGuide. Guides add significant context to what you're seeing and handle all logistics — highly recommended for first-timers.

Best Day Combination

Teotihuacán in the morning + Xochimilco in the afternoon — leave at 7am, pyramids 9am–1pm, back to CDMX by 2pm, Xochimilco canals 3–6pm, dinner in Coyoacán or Roma Norte. One of the best days you'll ever have.
