The Best Way: Metro + Tren Ligero
The fastest, cheapest, and most reliable route to Estadio Azteca is via Mexico City's Metro combined with the Tren Ligero (Light Rail). This is what locals use, what FIFA recommends, and what will save you hours on match day.
💡 Pro Tip: On match days the Tren Ligero runs at full capacity from 3 hours before kickoff with increased frequency. Leave early — the earlier you go, the smoother the journey.
How Much Does It Cost?
| Transport | Cost (Pesos) | Cost (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Metro Line 2 | 5 pesos | ~$0.30 |
| Tren Ligero | 3 pesos | ~$0.20 |
| Total return trip | ~16 pesos | ~$1.00 |
| Uber (match day) | 300–600+ pesos | $15–35+ (surge) |
How Long Does It Take?
From Roma Norte or Condesa: 45–55 minutes total
From Centro Histórico: 35–45 minutes
From Polanco: 60–70 minutes (take Line 7 to Tacubaya, then Line 2 to Tasqueña)
From Coyoacán: 20–25 minutes (closest neighborhood!)
Alternative Route: Metro Line 3 + Electric Bus
Take Metro Line 3 to Universidad station, then connect to an electric bus directly to the stadium. This works well if you're coming from the west side of the city or Polanco area. Allow an extra 10–15 minutes compared to the Line 2 route.
Park & Ride Option
For World Cup 2026, FIFA and Mexico City have set up official Park & Ride services from designated lots across the city. A round trip costs 500 pesos from most lots, or 350 pesos from Parque México, with a special transport card included. Shuttles run every 15 minutes. Great option if you're in a group or staying outside the city center.
Should You Take an Uber?
On match days, driving is strongly discouraged. Street parking near the stadium is restricted. If you do use a rideshare, add at least 90 minutes to your expected journey and expect 3–5x surge pricing right after the final whistle. Our recommendation: Metro there, wait 30–40 minutes after the match and then Uber back if you prefer.
What to Bring on Match Day
- Mobile tickets only — download the FIFA World Cup 26 App before you travel. No paper tickets.
- No outside food or drink — not allowed inside the stadium
- Light jacket — evenings in June drop to ~11°C (52°F)
- Rain gear — June is rainy season in Mexico City
- Cash pesos — for Metro, Tren Ligero, and street vendors outside
- Charged phone — your ticket lives on it
- Metro app — download the CDMX Metro app for real-time route info
How Early Should You Arrive?
Plan for 90 minutes minimum before kickoff. For the Opening Match (June 11) and Mexico fixtures, allow 2 full hours given international crowd volumes and elevated security checks. Gates open hours before kickoff — use the extra time to soak up the electric pre-match atmosphere outside.
Getting Back After the Match
Right after the final whistle, every fan tries to leave at the same time. The Tren Ligero will be packed. Our advice: stay near the stadium for 30–45 minutes — grab a street taco from the vendors outside, let the rush clear, then head to the station. The wait is worth it.
